'Then came a song called West of the Wall by Toni Fisher. It was first experience of being truly electrified by a piece of music. The singer belted it out in a manner unlike anything I had ever heard before. It was totally riveting. My body seemed to tingle and bristle in response to the sheer energy of it. I remember how much bluer and brighter and faster everything seemed to become while the song was playing. When it was finished all I wanted to do was hear it again. I probably heard this song a couple more times in my life, but I've never forgotten it and in 1982 I managed to buy a copy. The bliss.' Some Times is the story of Damien Lovelock's obsession with rock 'n' roll. Hooked from the moment he heard West of the Wall, Damien knew the one thing - the only thing - he had to be was in a band. He takes us from the Streetnoise, the band he started when he was 14, to the glorious days when The Celibate Rifles were kings of the indie music scene and New York's Village Voice had called them 'the best live band in the world.' Here's how it all began: 'At six o'clock on the night we assembled in the bedroom, posed for family snaps on our totally happening threads and then cleared the room. I produced a small joint of highly dubious quality which we passed around, more as a rite of passage than a mood enhancer. We were so shit-wired on adrenalin someone could have slipped a trip into our cokes and no one would've noticed. Then, in true Rolling Stones fashion we sauntered onto the stage at something approaching a casual sprint. (It was actually the lounge room floor, but not that night.) 'We opened with 'Jumping Jack Flash' and if inspiration counts for anything then we killed 'em in the first sixteen bars. When we fifnished I opened my eyes and most of the room was staring at us with a mixture of astonishment, delight and disbelief...a most intoxicating cocktail. Then they exploded. I could hardly contain myself. If I hadn't been wearing sunnies I might've cried... 'By the night's end we had all experienced complete transformation. We were no longer someone's kid brother or Theo's mate from footy. We were Steetnoise the band, the real thing. We were stars in our own neighbourhood. After the party we all walked the streets until sunrise and watched it down at Rose Bay beach. It remains one of those perfect remembered moments of childhood. Sheer perfection. No one spoke much.
